Frequently Asked Questions

How does redundancy work in Midas Immersion Cooling tanks?

While only one cooling module is necessary for operation, a second module is a redundant backup (2N redundancy). This redundancy guarantees that even if one module experiences a failure or requires maintenance, the cooling process continues seamlessly without any interruptions. In other words, the second module ensures that the cooling never stops, providing a reliable and continuous cooling solution for the tanks.

Does Midas redundancy work in all tanks?

Currently, redundancy is specific to the Midas 50U Tank. The Midas Immersion Cooling system is designed with redundancy features that ensure uninterrupted cooling. Redundancy can be engineered with any Midas tank for the right customer demand.

What if I already have a Data Center?

  1. If you already have a Data Center, incorporating immersion cooling into your existing infrastructure is viable. Immersion cooling requires minimal additional infrastructure, allowing you to reuse your current data center structure. You can integrate Midas Immersion Cooling tanks into your data center by placing them within the existing facility.

  2. If you have sufficient space, another approach is to deploy a Midas Containerized Immersion Cooling equipment solution outside the data center. This enables you to continue using your current data center infrastructure internally or repurpose it while adding immersion cooling capabilities through a separate containerized system located externally. This approach maximizes space and resources at your data center facility.

Regardless of the specific implementation method, Midas Immersion Cooling offers the flexibility to adapt and enhance your current data center setup, allowing for efficient cooling and optimized performance while minimizing the need for extensive infrastructure changes.

How is immersion cooling more sustainable?

Immersion cooling offers several sustainability advantages compared to traditional air cooling methods.

  • Reduced Power Consumption: Midas Immersion Cooling typically consumes around 50% less power at least 30% less power than conventional air cooling. This reduction is primarily due to the highly efficient heat transfer properties of immersion cooling, which eliminate the need for energy-intensive air conditioning systems and fans. By minimizing power consumption, Midas Immersion Cooling helps lower carbon emissions and contributes to overall energy efficiency.

  • Water Conservation: Many liquid cooling systems are water intensive and inefficient. The closed-loop nature of immersion cooling systems minimizes water waste by minimizing the need for a constant fresh water supply. Water conservation contributes to sustainable practices, especially when water scarcity is a concern.

  • Higher Equipment Density: Midas Immersion Cooling allows higher equipment density within a given space than air cooling. Each server is in physical contact to the next as the cooling dielectric flows through each server to cool it. This increased equipment density enables better space utilization, reduces the footprint required for data center expansion, and optimizes resource allocation.

  • Longer Hardware Lifespan: Immersion cooling eliminates exposure to dust, humidity, and other airborne contaminants that can affect server components. This cleaner environment reduces corrosion, leading to fewer hardware failures and a longer lifespan for IT equipment. By extending the usable life of the hardware, immersion cooling reduces electronic waste and promotes sustainability through more efficient use of resources.

What is Midas' Unique Sales Proposition (USP) compared to other immersion cooling options?

Midas stands out among other immersion cooling options due to its unique features and capabilities.

  • Technical Experience: With a proven track record and a deep understanding of the technology (since 2010), Midas has accumulated valuable expertise in delivering effective immersion cooling solutions.

  • Patented Technology: Midas employs patented immersion cooling technology, setting it apart from competitors. These proprietary innovations ensure efficient heat transfer, reliable operation, and optimal data center equipment performance.

  • Large Deployment Experience: With over 250 MW of installed cooling capacity, Midas has valuable experience in meeting the challenges of large deployments which are vastly different than proof-of-concept or R&D applications. This means Midas can effectively handle the cooling needs of data centers with high-density equipment deployments, ensuring efficient and effective cooling performance.

  • The only fully redundant and hot-swappable solution: Midas provides a fully redundant solution, meaning that even in the event of a failure or maintenance requirement of one cooling module, the system remains operational without any cooling interruptions. This high level of redundancy enhances data center reliability and minimizes the risk of downtime.

Does Midas work outside of the US?

Yes, Midas Immersion Cooling solutions are not limited to the United States and can be deployed worldwide. Regardless of the location, Midas technology can be adapted. Whether your data center is located in the US or any other country, Midas offers flexibility and compatibility to ensure seamless integration with the local power infrastructure.

What is dielectric fluid?

Dielectric fluid is an electrically insulating substance used in applications like immersion cooling. It does not conduct electricity, providing insulation between components while facilitating heat transfer.

What should be done if the dielectric fluid spills on the floor?

Generally, a dielectric fluid can simply be absorbed with paper-based wipes or whatever is preferred and the absorbent material disposed of properly.  It’s always good practice to consult the safety data sheet (SDS) provided by the dielectric fluid manufacturer for any specific guidance on handling and cleanup procedures. The SDS contains detailed information about the properties of the fluid, potential hazards, and recommended safety measures.

Is the dielectric fluid used in Midas Immersion Cooling systems toxic? Is it harmful if it comes into contact with the skin over the long term?

Midas recommends the use of dielectrics manufactured from polyalphaolefin base oils which are non-toxic. The safety data sheet (SDS) provided by the dielectric fluid manufacturer should always be consulted for accurate information regarding toxicity and potential long-term effects on the skin.
